In a video which has been shared widely on social media, looters can also be seen smashing the windows of an Iceland store in Middlesbrough, where the shutters had been forced open.

Meanwhile, a video of Greggs store in Hull also shows a group of rioters trying to break in.

In response to the riots, Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) issued a statement, ensuring it would “provide help and guidance to retailers and colleagues during this time”.

It added: “Help for retailers and colleagues is available through crisis support at Grocery Aid, whom we have contacted and are prepared for calls related to these incidents.

“We are also in discussion with the Home Office about the way the Riot Compensation Act’s provisions can be applied in these incidents, where retailers will be able to claim compensation if they have been impacted by a riot.”
