Ocado was the fastest growing retailer overall, with sales increasing by 14.1%, which was driven by a rise in customer numbers and shopping frequency. The online retailer’s market share went up to 2.1%, which was a 1.9% increase from 2025.

Waitrose, Iceland and Morrisons experienced a slight sales increase of 5.5%, 3.2% and 2.5%, respectively. Asda continued to see sales decline at 3.7%, while Co-op’s sales went down by 1.6%.

Overall take-home sales at grocers increased by 3.8% in the four weeks to 25 January 2026 compared to the year prior, according to data from Worldpanel by Numerator.

This month, like-for-like grocery price inflation eased back to 4%, the lowest since last April.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel by Numerator, said: “For most shoppers, January is all about resetting household budgets, and this year was no exception.

“While grocery sales continue to grow and inflation eased to its lowest level in months, value remained front of mind for many – with own label hitting a record high, accounting for more than half of all grocery spend.”

The data also found that own-label spending accounted for 52.2% of grocery shopping, while promotional purchases increased by 10.9% year-over-year.

Fresh fruit and dried pulse volumes increased by 6% year on year, and there was growth in fresh fish, poultry and chilled yoghurt by 5%, 3% and 4%, respectively.

The research also found that nearly a quarter (23%) of shoppers are actively seeking out high-protein options, and 26% are looking for high-fibre products.
