Asda becomes latest retailer to slash baby formula prices

Asda has joined Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Iceland in unveiling a raft of further price cuts on essential baby formula products to help families keep costs down.

From 9 March, prices on Cow & Gate, Aptamil and SMA baby forumla products will decrease by an average 6.5%.

In-store and online at Asda.com, 1.2kg packs of Cow & Gate first baby milk formula and follow on baby milk formula will drop to £12 each, 1.2kg packs of Aptamil milk powder and follow on milk will be reduced to £16, and SMA Little Steps 800g infant milk powder formula will be lowered from £9.75 to £7.95.

The changes come in addition to a series of initial reductions at the supermarket giant which kicked off in January, where a total of six Aptamil lines across the Core range were lowered in price by an average of 7%.

Asda said it will continue to work with its suppliers to ensure that any further falls in production costs are passed onto customers.

It follows similar moves by other major retailers as last month, Iceland cut the cost of SMA’s Little Steps formula milk to £7.95 for 800g in-stores and online.

Aldi has slashed the price of its own-brand infant first formula milk for the second time in a week, with its own-brand Mamia Infant First Formula now priced at £8.49 for 900g.

This week, Sainsbury’s cut prices across brands including Aptamil, Cow & Gate and SMA, and added its own-brand Little Ones range – which includes more than 60 products – to its Aldi Price Match scheme.

Tesco has also reduced 1.2kg boxes of Cow & Gate formula to £12, lowered 1.2kg tubs of Aptamil to £16 and dropped the price of 800g tubs of SMA Little Steps infant formula from £9.75 to £7.95.
