Aldi is to launch recyclable paper wine bottles in a bid to offer “greener choices” and “drive sustainable change”.
The new packaging, which is thought to be a first for UK supermarkets, will roll out across the discount grocer’s own-brand Cambalala South African Shiraz and South African Sauvignon Blanc.
The bottles created in partnership with sustainable packaging firm Frugalpac, are made from 94% recycled carboard, lined with a food-grade pouch, and are five times lighter than a normal glass bottle.
They are set to launch on 18 March, with the products priced at £7.99 each.

Aldi UK managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said: “Shoppers are striving to become more sustainable in their everyday lives, looking for small ways to make a big difference for our planet.
“Our buying teams are continuously thinking of how we can evolve our ranges to offer greater value and greener choices. We are proud to be the first supermarket to launch an own-brand paper bottle, helping to drive sustainable change.”
It follows similar changes across FMCG brands in recent years.
In 2022, Perfetti Van Melle unveiled paper bottles for its Mentos Pure Fresh Gum range which looked to reduce the plastic in its packaging by 93%.
Last year, Absolut Vodka launched a single-mould paper bottle in Tesco, which marked the first time paper-based bottles had been sold commercially in-store by a global spirits company.
The drinks giant said the 500ml bottles were made from 57% paper with an integrated barrier of recyclable plastic and are eight times lighter and easier to carry than standard glass alternatives.
