Nestlé and Diageo expand regenerative agriculture tie-up

Nestlé Purina Petcare and alcohol FMCG giant Diageo have expanded their regenerative agriculture programme into Yorkshire, working together to improve sustainability and production resilience.

Spearheaded by sustainability consultancy 3Keel, the Landscape Enterprise Networks (LENs) bring together businesses and farmers to improve the resilience of local landscapes.

The latest move has seen Nestlé Purina Petcare and Diageo partner to invest in measures across almost 700 hectares of arable land in the county.

The programme aims to support farmers to adopt regenerative agricultural practices – including reducing cultivation systems, improving nutrient use efficiency and implementing grazing livestock.

It is designed to deliver benefits such as increased soil fertility, reduced on-farm greenhouse gas emissions and improved habitat for farmland wildlife.

Nestlé UK and Ireland regeneration lead Matt Ryan said: “It is great news to have another LENs programme running in Yorkshire. Working together for a shared environmental interest is key for both the programme and our landscapes to thrive.

“At Nestlé we have an ambition to use our size, scale and reach to play our part in tackling climate change and make a difference.”

Earlier this year, both FMCG giants embraced more sustainable measures, with Nestlé investing in its first electric trucks as it aims to meet its goal of being net zero by 2050, while Diageo launched an open innovation call for start-ups to improve water use across its supply chain.

Elsewhere, Guinness manufacturer Diageo is understood to be in the very early stages of exploring the sale of summer beverage staple Pimm’s, as it searches for a new chairman.
