Morrisons group retail director David Lepley resigns

Morrisons group retail director David Lepley has resigned after nearly eight years at the supermarket giant.

Lepley has vast experience in the grocery sector, having began his career at Asda in 2005 before joining Morrisons in 2016.

M&S looked to hire him in 2019, however Lepley decided to remain at Morrisons after his promotion to operations director. A year later, he joined the grocer’s executive committee and was appointed group retail director.

It is not yet known if his position will be replaced, according to The Telegraph.

It comes as new chief executive Rami Baitieh has vowed to “reinvigorate” the supermarket, bringing to the business a new transformation plan which will be unveiled in March.

Last month, Baitieh said: “Since the pandemic, Morrisons has not been on peak form. Our market share has slipped slowly but consistently, our like-for-likes – although an improving and encouraging trend – have been below the pack for a while and the switching data has not been encouraging.”

However, the retailer saw “positive” full-year profits up 6.5%, and Baitieh said that impoving its customer satisfaction scores will be the “bedrock of our next chapter”.

Last week, Morrisons unveiled plans to invite customers to join its management meetings and monthly customer roundtables in stores to provide ideas on how it could improve.
