Watch: Tesco urges shoppers to be ‘more Christmas’ in 2023 ad

Tesco is urging people to get into the festive spirit as it launches its Christmas advert.

Unveiled today (19 November) UK’s largest retailer‘s campaign, created with BBH, depicts a family getting into the Christmas spirit ahead of the big day, much to their teenage son’s initial reluctance.

Broadcast during ITV’s ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’, which starts at 9 m, the ad opens with an enthusiastic dad transforming into a Christmas tree upon trying a Tesco festive sampling display.

As the advert progresses, an increasing number of characters burst into the festive spirit, shown by each individual taking the form of different Christmas figures.

It is only when the father hands his son a long-forgotten hand-made Christmas tree topper, does he finally embraces the spirit, and ‘becomes more Christmas’.

Featuring clips showcasing the grocer’s festive food and drink range at Clubcard Prices as well as decoration and gifts, the advert aims to present Tesco as a supermarket that is here to help with Christmas preparations.

The advert, which features OMC’s ‘How Bizarre’ as its soundtrack, is designed to bring to life how the build-up to Christmas can be just as special as the big day.

Tesco’s 2023 Christmas Report revealed that nearly a third of UK adults (31%) find the build up to Christmas more exciting than the day itself.

“We want our seasonal campaigns to reflect how our customers feel as we know there’s been even more anticipation ahead of festivities this year,” said Tesco group customer director Emma Botton.

“Our Christmas Report revealed that, as early as September, nearly a quarter of the nation (24%) were already looking forward to celebrating Christmas more than usual.

“This year, our #BecomeMoreChristmas ad captures the emotions and excitement we feel, as we draw closer to the big day.

“At Tesco, as Christmas approaches, we’re providing customers with all their festive favourites and some exciting twists, with quality and great value at the heart of it all.”

The advert, which was teased in a sneak preview last week, will be supported by campaign activity including in-store sampling and free Santa’s Grottos and Christmas markets.
