The John Lewis Partnership has appointed Martin Gafsen as its new director of property.
According to The Grocer, Gafsen will join the business from the Royal Mail Group, where he is currently interim finance director.
The former solicitor and investment banker has been with the postal group for 16 years, in roles including property and facilities director.
He is now set to join the partnership on 13 November. In his new position, Gafsen will report to Bérangère Michel, the John Lewis Partnership’s executive director of finance, where he will be tasked with overseeing the partnership’s plans to develop housing.
Gafsen will replace the outgoing Chris Harris, who announced his departure earlier this year.
The news comes as Waitrose and John Lewis chair Dame Sharon White is to stand down in February 2025.

Gafsen said: “It’s a great privilege to join the partnership, home to two of the UK’s most loved brands.
“With an extensive and valuable property portfolio, we have an important role to play in ensuring it continues delivering value for the long-term benefit of customers and partners for generations to come.”
Michel added: “I’m delighted to welcome Martin to the partnership.
“His wealth of experience will be instrumental in helping to deliver our future growth. I would also like to wish Chris Harris all the best for the future and thank him for his immense contribution to our business.”
Last month, the John Lewis Partnership was planning to make £150m from the sale and leaseback of 12 Waitrose stores in a bid to raise more capital.
