Tesco is plotting the launch of an online marketplace where shoppers can purchase a wide selection of third-party products, as well as “core grocery basket” items already available on Tesco.com.
It is understood that the retailer has been developing the technology for the marketplace for two years, with it set to roll out as early as the beginning of 2024, The Grocer reported.
Some of the categories expected to be offered include petfood, health and beauty and alcohol across some brands already listed in the supermarket giant’s stores as well as unlisted challenger brands.
Tesco is currently looking to recruit a business development manager for its marketplace, to “translate our strategy into action by recruiting and managing a set of sellers to deliver a compelling range proposition for customers and achieve our GMV targets”.

In a job listing for the position, the grocer said the marketplace is a “key pillar of our strategy to be ‘easily the most convenient’ grocer, offering customers the opportunity to shop a broad range of third party products, alongside their core grocery basket, seamlessly on Tesco.com”.
While it has not yet confirmed or denied the launch, Tesco told The Grocer that it was in ongoing talks with suppliers to build its online proposition.
Last November, Tesco launched a new surplus marketplace, Tesco Exchange, where more than 3,500 suppliers can sell or donate excess stock or products by being matched with other suppliers who can make better use of the excess.
More recently, Sainsbury’s set out at launching a new online marketplace for high street fashion, pitching to brands the idea of selling via its website and in up to 60 larger stores.
