Scotmid COO to become CEO as John Brodie retires

Scotmid chief operating officer Karen Scott will step into the role of CEO in August 2024, as John Brodie is to retire after over 30 years at the convenience retailer.

Scott will remain in her current role of COO until May of next year when she will become chief executive designate before officially taking over as CEO from Brodie in August.

Previously Scott held the role of head of Semichem at Scotmid and has 36 years experience in retail.

The appointment also marks a milestone as Scott is to become the first female CEO in the 164 year history of Scotmid Co-op.

She said: “It really is an honour to be appointed to this position. It is a huge responsibility to take over from John next year.

“Obviously it is a major step up to be CEO but I am ready for all the challenges that lie ahead. I am looking forward to working with the board and John in the lead up to next August.”

Brodie, who has been Scotmid CEO since 2005, announced that he would be retiring in August 2024.

He explained: “It’s certainly not goodbye just yet as there is still a great deal of work to be done between now and next August so it’s very much business as usual.”

Speaking of Scott’s appointment, Brodie added: “I am absolutely delighted that the board has appointed Karen to become the future CEO of Scotmid. I have worked with Karen for the past 22 years and seen her career progress over that time.

“It is especially pleasing that the board has been able to make an internal appointment. It will now be business as usual as look forward to our full year results next May and the handover to Karen in August.”
