Morrisons CEO pledges to roll out Savers range in c-stores

Morrisons CEO David Potts has vowed to stock the supermarkets Savers budget range across its Daily convenience stores to cater for low-income families.

The announcement came as MPs questioned the UK’s leading supermarkets on 27 June over concerns they had been profiteering while consumers faced rising food prices.

The Business and Trade Committee asked executives how supermarkets are serving those reliant on convenience stores.

This comes as consumer watchdog Which? found that supermarket-branded convenience stores are not offering budget grocery lines in the most vulnerable areas, despite 66% of those on less that £21k per year shopping in a smaller store at least once a week.

Potts said that while he believes “there is plenty of own brand in c-stores across Britian,” Morrisons would now stock its Savers range “particularly in those areas where people are relying on those stores,” The Grocer reported.

He said that this will be put in place “especially up until food inflation normalises in this country,” adding that the grocer had reduced prices by up to 10% in the 400 former McColl’s stores that have been converted to Morrisons Daily sites.

Last week, Morrisons unveiled plans to have an additional 350 convenience stores by the end of 2023, taking the total to almost 1,000, which it said would give it a “significantly enhanced position in the UK convenience sector”.

In the hearing, supermarkets including Morrisons were also questioned over profiteering claims, which Potts denied.

He said the supermarket is “acutely aware of the pressure many millions of people have come under”, adding that it is “as close now as we have ever been to Aldi and Lidl prices”.
