Aldi named Britain’s cheapest supermarket for 12th month in a row

Aldi has been crowned Britain’s cheapest supermarket for the 12th consecutive month, with a basket of 40 groceries costing an average of £68.60.

In May, consumer watchdog Which? found that while Aldi was the least expensive grocer, Lidl came in at a close second with £70.51.

Across the Big 4 grocers, Asda was named the cheapest at £76.45, while Tesco was just 43p more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £77.56.

Ocado and Waitrose were found to cost the most for a basket of groceries at £83.90 and £86.81, respectively.

However, for a full trolley of 131 items including Andrex toilet paper and Cathedral City cheese, and excluding discounters Aldi and Lidl, Asda was the cheapest supermarket for the fifth month in a row at £332.40.

Morrisons followed at just £2.07 more for a larger selection of groceries, while Waitrose was again the most expensive at £363.99.

“The price of food and drink is continuing to soar, as people suffer through the worst cost-of-living crisis in decades,” Which? retail editor, Ele Clark told the Mail Online.

“It’s no surprise to see many shoppers turning to discounters like Aldi and Lidl when our research shows they could make savings of more than £18 on a basket of everyday groceries.”

She added that supermarkers need to “provide transparent and comparable pricing so people can easily work out which products offer the best value.”

However, grocery price inflation fell for the second month in a row and now sits at 17.2%, for the four weeks to 14 May 2023.

As commodity prices having begun to fall for wheat and butter, retailers including Sainsbury’s Tesco, Lidl and Morrisons slashed the prices of own-label bread and butter last month in a bid to help shoppers save.
