M&S appoints Cheryl Potter as new non-executive director

Marks & Spencer has named former head of the global consumer team at private equity firm Permira, Cheryl Potter, to its board as a non-executive director, effective from 1 March 2023.

During her career, Cheryl Potter has served on the boards of brands including iconic footwear company Dr Martens, Allegro, Homebase and Birds Eye.

Additionally, through her 20 years at Permira – a global private equity firm with €75bn assets under management – she built a “highly successful track record as an investor and steward of portfolio companies” M&S said, working with management teams to build better businesses.

Potter will join M&S’ Nomination Committee at the same time as joining the board.

M&S Chairman Archie Norman said: “I am delighted that a superstar of the private equity world is joining us at M&S. She brings enormous energy, passion and a strong shareholder value focus to the Board, as well as a great track record as a role model and advocate of women in leadership.”

Last week, it was revealed that M&S commercial director of food, George Wright will be joining redistribution charity, FareShare as its next CEO. The move will see Wright taking over from current CEO, Linday Boswell who spent 13 years at FareShare.

In other news, M&S has been crowned the best supermarket for shopping in-store with 77% overall customer satisfaction, according to recent data from consumer watchdog, Which?.
