Asda invests £141m in 10% pay increase and bonus for store colleagues

Asda is investing a record £141m in giving a 10% pay increase to hourly-paid store colleagues, as well as a bonus payment for staff.

The big 4 grocer  announced that pay rates will be rising to £11 per hour from April and £11.11 per hour from July this year, in a move which will benefit more than 115,000 colleagues who work across its 633 stores.

In addition, all eligible hourly-paid store colleagues who have been with Asda for more than three months will receive a bonus payment for 2022. The amount will be revealed at the end of February and paid the following month.

The new rates of pay, which exceed the Government’s national living wage, were agreed with trade union Usdaw.

It comes as the supermarket had been branded the “worst paying” Big 4 supermarket, despite its owners’ reporting £1.4 billion in petrol profits at its forecourt business EG Group, which Asda then responded to.

The retailer is also providing extra support for customers during the cost-of living-crisis by launching a new initiative to lock the prices on 600 popular branded and own label products.

The campaign will run from 21 February to 31 May, and more than half of which are fresh meat, dairy, fruit and vegetable products.

“We appreciate the great job that our store colleagues do representing Asda while serving customers day in and day out,” said co-owner, Mohsin Issa.

“We know that rising living costs are affecting customers and colleagues alike and recognise we have a responsibility to support them during these challenging times.”

Issa added: “This is why we have made a record investment of £141m to increase pay for retail colleagues by 10% this year.”

  • A 10% pay increase, yet STILL the lowest paid supermarket, what does that tell you about the pay for the last year?

Bonus? What bonus? 2022 bonus was about £400 for full time, but they cut the bonus for this year to £100 dependant on profit results. So in real terms, taking into account inflation and losing the bonus, the 10% pay increase you mention, is actually a pay cut

  • What you haven’t said is that because of this pay rise ASDA retail colleagues are be removed from the bonus scheme so this is the last year we will be eligible for a bonus. So it’s give with one hand while we take away with the other.

  • Re the alleged 10% pay rise for2023, Asda has fooled all of the media saying how wonderful for colleagues it is. Asda haven’t mentioned the rest to the media. 2023 bonus will be the last bonus for colleagues. Asda is also removing a location allowance of 50p /hr, from certain stores where staff get it & reduction of night supplement. Also a mention of contract change in November 2023, or get sacked.
So the 10% 2023, wage increase is a farce with all the other factors taken into consideration, so by the end of 2023, another of colleagues would have had a negative pay rise.
Asda has fooled the whole media again.
Its all about profit & not helping there colleagues, which they have tried out to make it fooling the media.
Last night we were told the good news about the 10% increase, then the negative things to go with it after.

  • I seen the pay rise information put on an A frame outside the office so when your clocking in you can see the information regarding the pay rise. However what they don’t say to the media and on the internet, is that the bonus colleagues receive this year and every year prior (in February/march) will now be the last one, due to the “generous pay rise”

  • It’s a absolute farce I work at asda and it has got really bad .there is less and less colleagues in each department and more and more work.and I’m sure the other retailers will beat our so called generous pay rise not to mention a 25.8% bonus is the worst bonus I have ever had there. No perks any more so sad these new owners just bothered about profit not people.
