Iceland first introduced the over-60 discount to establish its value offering during the cost-of-living crisis, open exclusively to people aged over 60 and only on Tuesdays.

Within the first four Tuesdays, 630,000 customers made use of the saving, which resulted in the discount becoming a consistent offering.

Out of the 25 exclusive brands Iceland offers, Greggs is reportedly the most purchased and makes up a whopping 15% of all over-60 shops.

Other shopping essentials found in an over-60s basket include Iceland’s Corned Beef, bottles of 2L Pepsi Max and a selection of Gregg’s frozen tasty bakes.

Tuesday shoppers buy a of Greggs Steak Bake (£3.00, 2 pack) and Greggs Sausage Rolls (£2.00, 4 pack) both of which came in 8th and 10th place, respectively.

“It’s clear that not only are our over-60 shoppers regularly making use of the discount, but that every Tuesday represents an opportunity to get out into the community and socialise in store,” managing director of Iceland, Richard Walker said.

He added: “As a supermarket that strives to deliver the best value for our customers, we are extremely proud of this milestone of eight million transactions and I hope it continues to help many more of our shoppers throughout the year.”

Walker also commented that Iceland Foods is the first and only supermarket in the UK to offer a discount to over-60’s, as it continues to help its shoppers tackle the cost-of-living crisis.

“The 10% discount is available in-store only and to receive the over-60s discount, shoppers simply need to show proof of age at the checkout, which could be a driving license, senior bus pass, senior rail card or Freedom Pass and swipe their Iceland Bonus Card,” he said.

The news comes as Iceland’s boss Richard Walker has warned the frozen food retailers profits will be “significantly down”, as the battle of costs between supermarkets and suppliers continue.

You cannot tell age by looking at people. The rule is show your ID and get the 10% discount.
If you want the discount then show your ID. Or don’t get the discount.
    Great job Iceland.

Refused 10% discount today because I did not have a bonus card. I was told that the rules had changed in March. How disgusting that no publicity was given to this change.

No discount again today, even with bonus card.
It seems to depend on the staff member and if they want to be bothered or not.

Iceland need to retrain their staff.
Little bit of authority is a dangerous thing.
Older people find it difficult enough to accept that we rely on discounts to afford groceries.
    Without some staff causing embarrassment

Iceland need to retrain staff about senior discounts as they dont seem to know what is appropriate. Older people find it difficult enough that they need discounted groceries, without added embarrassment from staff

I bought a net of Easy Peelers on Saturday. When I got home and took them out one fruit was one third mushy. The pack says Iceland will cheerfully replace it. I phoned the number but the recorded message said to use the website.

I go to the Cambridge Iceland branch nearly every Tuesday to get my 10% discount. The staff are always friendly and helpful.

  • Was refused 10% discount in East Grinstead store as I did not have a bonus card. This is discrimination against people who do not have a bonus card. We should still be able to get a discount if over 60 with proof.

  • I have a bonus card and proof of my age (senior rail card – expired one at that!) and so far have received the 10% discount.
Does anyone know if you still gets points on your bonus card or is the 10% given instead of this? I do not seem to be getting any points added to my bonus balance so just wondered if anyone know.

  • Why don’t pensioners get this discount on home deliveries .I buy a lot from Iceland but have never had a discount as I can’t get into their stores on Tuesday .I think discount should be available to all regular customers who are pensioners all the time .

  • I took my mum to The Food Warehouse, Scunthorpe last Tuesday she spent £50 or so. We asked about the over 60s as she is 76 and we were told no you can’t get discount you need a card. The girl on the till knew a lady a few people infront if us she was in her 30s and a new baby. She asked if anyone had a over 60s card and she used that person’s to give the young lady a huge discount she spent nearly £80.00 of shopping yet no where near over 60. Yet my mum could not get it with proof she is 76. This is disgusting. I thought if you took proof you got discount and the cashiers excuse was we have no over 60s discount cards we have to go into an Iceland shop to ask if they have any because they need the card.

I was also refused the discount as I did not have a bonus card. Always got it before by showing my freedom pass will take my business elsewhere in future.
