Tesco launches dedicated section for ‘easily forgotten’ Christmas products

Tesco has launched a dedicated section across its Express stores for “easily forgotten” Christmas items.

Rolling out to 1,957 stores, the area which includes products such as gravy, stuffing, cooking oil and fruit cocktail comes as the Big 4 grocer has experienced a rush among customers to buy essential, but often forgotten festive staples in the run up to Christmas.

Other items commonly found to be an afterthought for shoppers include meringue nests, kitchen roll, mayonnaise, bin liners, table salt, toilet roll and cling film.

Last year in the week leading up to the big day, Tesco Express stores saw a 150% spike in sales of tin foil, a near 200% increase on stuffing sales, a 155% lift in sales of table sauces and sales of gravy granuels up by more than a third.

“We know Christmas is a busy time of year – so while it’s easy to remember the turkey and Brussels sprouts, it’s just as easy to forget those bin liners for the end of day clear-up, or kitchen roll for Christmas dinner spillages,” Tesco convenience managing director, Kevin Tindall said.

“With the launch of our ‘easily forgotten’ sections, we’re giving our customers one less thing to worry about this Christmas.”

This comes as Tesco has taken its annual Christmas market on the road for the third year in-a-row, in partnership with brand agency N2O.

The Christmas activation, which allows customers to “try before they buy”, aims to show the right way to celebrate Christmas no matter their budget.
