Rapid grocery delivery service Getir has hit a milestone, having donated over 500,000 meals from its gstores.

Organised by giving platform Neighbourly, 234 tonnes of food have been donated to 308 local causes and as a result, 868 tonnes of Co2 have been saved with an overall financial impact of over £1 million.

This comes as UK inflation rose to a 40-year high at 11.1% last month, according to the latest figures by the Office for National Statistics.

As food prices are increasing, Neighbourly’s Community Research found that 60% of food banks have seen a reduction in food donations from the public and businesses.

Getir’s donations will be placed around the UK where households are most likely to need added food support, identified by The Priority Places for Food Index.

“Local communities are incredibly important to Getir, and we want to do our bit to support them,” Getir UK general manager, Kristof Van Beveren.

“We pride ourselves on being a company that is an active, visible, and valuable member of the towns and cities where our service exists. This is more important than ever now as families face uncertainties and challenges with the cost of living and where we can, we will step up to offer help to those in need.”

Neighbourly CEO, Steve Butterworth added: “We are delighted to be working with Getir on their surplus food programme which is donating quality food to local organisations on a daily basis.

“Getir is genuinely striving to create positive social and environmental change in the communities where they operate and 500,000 meals is a considerable milestone. Those meals will have made a huge difference for families that are struggling with  the devastating rise in energy bills and cost of household essentials.”
