Morrisons accused of selling pumpkins at ‘extravagantly high prices’

Morrisons pumpkin offerings has caused customer backlash as it charges £8.99 for its giant pumpkins, a price tag higher than any other major UK supermarket.

Last week, the grocery retailer unveiled its pumpkin range which includes Ghost Pumpkins, Mixed Squash, large, medium and ‘pocket money’ Munchkin pumpkins at 59p each.

Its other varieties range from 99p to £2.99 and are currently available across 100 stores.

However, Morrisons Giant Pumpkins are being hit back at by shoppers for their steeper price point.

According to Manchester Evening News, a shopper posted a photo of a box of the £8.99 pumpkins to a budget Facebook Group, with users commenting that it had “to be an error”.

Another said: “Morrisons absolutely robbing their loyal customers with the extravagantly high prices on the basics and things people need, all their own brands have been pushed up so much.”

A spokesperson for Morrisons added: “Our giant pumpkins are a larger alternative to our standard large pumpkin and remain a popular choice for customers. However we do offer a range of cheaper alternatives to suit, with our munchkin pumpkin costing as little as 59p and our large pumpkin at just £1.99.”

Across the UK’s other supermarket giants including Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s, pumpkins are priced online between 79p and £3.

At Waitrose, its offerings range from £1 to £3.50, and at discount grocers Lidl and Aldi, its ‘Munchkin’ pumpkins begin at 59p.
