Iceland managing director Richard Walker has launched a bid to become an MP and has been named on the Conservatives list of approved parliamentary candidates.
According to reporting by Retail Week, Walker looks to stand for parliament at the next general election, however said that sources revealed this list included hundreds of names and that it would not be definite that he would obtain a seat.
If Walker was to become an MP, he would first need to apply to be shortlisted for a seat and complete an application form detailing aspects of his life and his political experience. If able to pass this stage, he would then attend a parliamentary assessment board.
This news comes as at the beginning of the month, the frozen food retailer boss called on the Conservative Party to increase Universal Credit to £20 a week and described PM Liz Truss’ priorities as “odd” at the Conservative Party Conference.
Earlier this year, Walker also joined the governments rebooted business council alongside industry leaders to help drive a high productivity, high growth economy over the next year and “level up local economies around the country”.
Asda chairman and former M&S boss Stuart Rose is a current member of the House of Lords, alongside former managing director for Waitrose, Mark Price.
