Asda has held onto the crown for being the UK’s cheapest online supermarket.

According to latest research by online price-tracking website Alertr, the Big 4 grocer has continued to be the least expensive grocer for Brits currently looking to keep grocery costs down, as the ongoing cost-of-living crisis intensifies.

Last month, an average monthly shopping basket cost at Asda was £117.85, which was £21.79 cheaper than Waitrose, which was named the most expensive online UK supermarket.

Big 4 rival Tesco was found to be the second most affordable online shop reporting an average monthly basket cost of £125.18.

Morrisons came in at third with an average price of £125.52, followed closely by Sainsbury’s which reported an average cost of £127.60.

Online-only grocer Ocado was the second most expensive online supermarket, according to research, with an average basket spend of £130.62.

“It’ll be interesting to see how the battle of the supermarkets will play out over the next few months – whether Asda will continue to reign supreme and if the other spots on the leaderboard start to compete more closely again,” Alertr co-founder Andy Barr said.

“With the cost of living crisis squeezing household incomes more than ever, especially as we head into autumn and winter, who knows if this will impact consumer habits.

“On top of this, the October price cap increase will inevitably cause many families to look harder at their expenses each month, so it’ll certainly be telling how supermarkets react to this and if product prices increase in line with suspected further inflation rate rises.”
