Asda opens 50th convenience store as it announces further expansion plans

Big 4 grocer Asda has opened its 50th ‘On The Move’ site as it looks to continue expanding its convenience store offerings.

The new roadside store which opened on the Pride Park retail estate in Derby yesterday, 7 September is the first of five sites set to open this week.

Further planned openings include in Bangor, Leicester, Stoke and Stourport-on-Severn as Asda looks to make its store locations more accessible to its existing and new customers.

Each Asda On The Move site, which is owned and operated by independent convenience retailer, EG Group sees over 1,300 branded and Asda own-label products supplied on a wholesale agreement.

Other items available within the stores include EG Group owned food-to-go brands and products from franchise partners including Starbucks, Greggs, Subway and Cinnabon.

“We are delighted to have reached the landmark opening of our 50th Asda On The Move store,” Asda vice president of wholesale and convenience, Steve Shirley said.

“The popularity of these stores shows us that customers want to be able to pick up essentials quickly and conveniently or grab a spontaneous treat whilst they’re refuelling, and we look forward to continuing to provide that service to our customers in the future.’’

EG Group UK country manager PFS, Ilyas Malji added: “We are pleased with the current progress of our supermarket partnership and have ensured that all our Asda On The Move convenience stores are of high-build quality, provide excellent welfare for customers and colleagues, a broad range of products and services, and reflect an attractive Asda brand experience throughout.

“Our team continues to work closely with various Asda functions to identify a good development pipeline of new stores and refine the convenience retail provision along with associated processes and procedures.

“I am pleased to share we have now established a solid platform and will be looking to accelerate this growth in the coming year and build on this 50 store milestone.”
