Aldi partners with Too Good To Go to tackle food waste

Aldi has partnered with surplus food app Too Good To Go in a bid to ramp up its ongoing battle against food waste.

The UK’s leading discounter – which is currently on the verge of overtaking Morrisons as the UK’s fourth largest supermarket – is currently trialling the app in seven stores across the North East of England.

The Too Good To Go apps allows customers to buy products that are damaged or approaching their use-by date at a vastly reduced cost. The exact contents of each £3.50 ‘Magic Bag’ remain unknown until they are collected, but each one is guaranteed to contain contain at least £10 worth of groceries.

“Tackling food waste has never been more important, both for the sake of the planet and to support people looking for the best possible value on their groceries,” said Aldi UK’s corporate responsibility director, Liz Fox.

“This trial will show us whether Too Good To Go can help us make better use of food that is nearing the end of its life while also giving customers the chance to enjoy our products at even more amazing prices than usual.”

The five-week trial began on 25 July 25 and if successful, will form a core part of Aldi’s commitment to cut food waste by 20% by 2025 and halve it by 2030. Aldi’s efforts already include a nationwide food donations programme that redistributes surplus food to local charities and community organisations.

The move to reduce food waste comes in the wake of supermarkets including Waitrose and M&S Food removing sell-by dates from their fresh fruit and veg in a bid to allow customers to trust their own judgement.

The move is expected to cut food waste by preventing households throwing away products that are still edible, with the government-backed Waste Resources Action Programme (Wrap) estimating that it could save the equivalent of 7m shopping baskets of food from the bin in the UK.
