Cost of living: Iceland gives pensioners £30 voucher to buy essentials

Supermarket chain Iceland is offering pensioners a £30 voucher for their food shops as the ongoing cost-of-living crisis intensifies.

In partnership with The Rothesay Foundation, eligible pensioners will be given the vouchers to spend in 269 stores in 17 areas nationwide.

This scheme will run from 1 August until 16 September.

According to the frozen food retailer these locations were identified as the places where there are some of the highest numbers of pensioners living in material deprivation in the country.

The foundation is also providing over £1 million of funding, which should help around 40,000 pensioners save on their shopping.

“Since the launch of the partnership last Christmas, the cost of living crisis has taken hold of the UK, and now more than ever, people are struggling to access the food they need,” Iceland Foods managing director Richard Walker.

“No one should ever have to worry about how they are going to eat or drink, and we hope that the support we can offer across the UK will help pensioners access and enjoy a worry-free meal during this difficult time.”

The news comes as Age UK revealed that 1.7 million pensioners were living in poverty in 2020/2021.
