Tesco launches mix and match deal to save plastic

Tesco has ditched the wrapping on its own-brand juice cartons, water bottles and fizzy drinks in a bid to achieve its sustainability goal of saving 45 million pieces of plastic a year.

Instead, the Big 4 grocer has started an initiative which allows shoppers to buy the same number of single drinks – mixing and matching them – but still pay the same price as a plastic-wrapped multipack.

Specifically, cans of fizzy drinks which were originally £1 for a multipack of four, can be bought individually for 50p or mixed and matched set of four cans without excess plastic for £1.

The move is set to save around 12 million pieces of plastic, and a further 33 million is estimated to save when more plastic is removed in autumn.

“Not only is this move great news for the environment but it will also offer customers more choice and flexibility,” Tesco spokesperson Johnny Neville said.

The news comes after the supermarket revealed saved 67 million pieces of plastic in January 2020 as it ditched multipack wraps from all its tins, including branded and own-branded beans, soup and tuna.

Similarly, M&S has engaged in efforts to reduce plastic with its new widely recyclable vine tomato packaging with 95% less plastic, as it looks to remove eight million units of plastic by the end of 2022.
