Tesco and Heinz resolve pricing dispute

Tesco and Heinz have resolved their high-profile pricing dispute in a move which will see the full range of Heinz products return to Tesco shelves.

The two companies issued a joint statement this afternoon, announcing they had “reached an agreement that will see the full range of Heinz products return to Tesco shelves and online” – bringing a fortnight of gaps on shelves to an end.

Heinz’s lorries – which had paused all deliveries to Tesco – would “hit the road shortly, and Tesco colleagues will be working hard to ensure shelves are filled again over the coming days”, the statement said, stressing this would include popular items such as Tomato Ketchup and Heinz Beans.

“With British summertime finally here, Tesco shoppers will be able to get all the essentials they need for their perfect summer salad or barbecue, including the Heinz varieties they know and love,” added the statement. “It’s great to be back together.”

Throughout the clash, Tesco took the position that the price increases asked for were “unjustifiable”, arguing it had “a responsibility to ensure customers get the best possible value”, and citing the growing pressure on household budgets due to the cost-of-living crisis.

At the time, a Tesco spokesperson said: “We’re laser-focused on keeping the cost of the weekly shop in check, offering customers great value through our combination of Aldi Price Match, Low Everyday Prices and Clubcard Prices.

“With household budgets under increasing pressure, now more than ever we have a responsibility to ensure customers get the best possible value, and we will not pass on unjustifiable price increases to our customers.”

It is unclear whether the retailer’s similar dispute with Mars over the price of petcare goods has also ended.
