Shoppers unhappy as supermarket comparison site Trolley could be forced to close

Supermarket price comparison website Trolley.co.uk is on the brink of closure due to licensing issues

As a result, the site is trying to crowdfund more than £28,000 to stay afloat.

Trolley.co.uk is a free website and app, which allows customers to compare the price of food, and other household products, at supermarkets and shops such as Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Wilko.

The free service, which compared over 7,000 products brands including Jack Daniels, Walkers and Birds Eye, was set up by four former grocery comparison site MySupermarket, which closed in 2020.

Earlier this month, however, the firm announced it may have to shut as it can’t afford to pay a licensing fee to use certain data. It’s currently trying to crowdfund the £28,800 needed.

Earlier this month, Trolley.co.uk announced it might have to stop trading as it cannot afford to pay a licensing fee to use certain data.

As a result, it has set up a crowdfunding attempt to raise the the £28,800 needed.

However, shoppers have taken to social media to voice their concerns about the possible closure.

One user said: “Save Trolley.co.uk from closing down . I use this wonderful app on every shopping trip and I absolutely love it! It saves so much money and it’s bloody sad that they’re being threatened with closure. They don’t make any money from it.”

Other users pleaded companies such as Tesco, Asda and Boots to donate money to help the firm from closing down.

One user said it is” a fantastic tool that helps people find the cheapest prices for their groceries. At times like these, it is needed.”

Since its launch in June 2021, the price comparison site claims its service has been used more than 11 million times.
