Tesco to pay workers almost £50m as “thank you” bonus

Tesco will be paying workers almost £50m as a “thank you” bonus, following its impressive end of year financial results, which were published earlier today.

The supermarket giant – which is the UK’s largest private employer – will be rewarding up to 290,000 shop staff, call centre and warehouse workers with a bonus worth 1.25% of their annual wages this May.

The additional payments will amount to almost £50 million and are being awarded to all employees as a special thank you for their efforts over the past year. The news comes as the supermarket reported increased annual profits of over £2bn.

Tesco said the payout “recognises the way colleagues really stepped up to the industry challenges of the last year”.

“I want to thank all of our colleagues who did a brilliant job navigating the ongoing pandemic, dealing with the supply chain challenges in the industry and tackling the onset of increasing inflation,” said Tesco boss Ken Murphy.

The bonus is the latest run of good news for Tesco workers, as the grocer recently announced a new pay deal for its employees that will see hourly pay for its in-store and depot staff members increase by 5.8%, from £9.55 to £10.10.

The move came after a number of other supermarkets, including Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Lidl and Aldi, increased their rate of basic pay as consumers are faced with the cost-of-living crisis.

  • Shame single parents who also get universal credit have to opt out , and will receive nothing,
Last time they gave credit voucher with bonus amount minus tax and insurance value,
This time they get nothing 🙁
Slight discrimination to the workers who need to claim a benefit along side there work hours ,
Well done to Tesco for giving the thank you bonus,
But don’t ALL staff deserve some sort of recognition.
