Asda report reveals ‘more men in senior roles’ despite 54% female workforce

Asda’s latest Gender Pay report has revealed that the grocer has more men working in senior roles across its business, despite having a 54% female workforce.

The report, published late last week, revealed that while Asda’s workforce consists of 54% female colleagues, only 40% of the senior leadership team are women.

This disparity has led to a median and mean bonus pay gap of 27.3% and 37.5% respectively, which the supermarket admits has been influenced by currently “having more men than women in senior roles”.

In a report submitted to the government’s Gender Pay website, Asda confirmed the median pay difference between all male and female Asda colleagues as 6.1%, up from 5.5% in 2020.

Additionally, the Big 4 grocer revealed its mean pay difference between all male and female colleagues is 8%, down from 8.4% in 2020.

Both figures are below the national average’s from ONS research, which highlights an average median pay gap of 15.4% and a mean pay gap of 14.6%.

The supermarket also spotlighted its 0% median pay gap for hourly-paid retail store colleagues, who make up 85% of Asda’s total workforce.

“We’re pleased that the 2021 results reflect the work we’ve been doing and continue to do to have more women in senior roles, increasing their representation from 38% in 2020 to 40% in 2021,” said Asda’s chief people officer Hayley Tatum said.

“We know there is more we can do to reduce our gender pay gap and this remains a core focus for us,”
