Aldi donates 550,000 meals to charity over festive period

Aldi has donated 550,000 meals to over 700 charities, community groups and food banks this Christmas.

The discount retailer linked its stores with local organisations to round up unsold fresh and chilled food from closed stores on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

The initiative was supported by Neighbourly, the community giving platform which pairs businesses to charitable organisations, which has helped Aldi’s 950 stores to donate all year round.

This year’s Christmas donation has helped Aldi meet its target to donate 1.8 million meals in November and December, with 10 million meals donated to vulnerable people in 2021.

Since the partnership with Neighbourly in 2019, Aldi has donated over 20 million meals across the UK.

The festive season is always a hard time for people affected by food poverty, so we are incredibly proud to have supported so many amazing causes over Christmas and New Year,” Aldi UK managing director of corporate responsibility Mary Dunn said.

Founding member of Child Food Poverty Taskforce Marcus Rashford MBE added: “The festive period has always proved a difficult time for the most vulnerable in society and this year is no exception. Post-Covid 19, the need for support is higher than ever.

“It’s great to see that Aldi continues to take steps to support our children though their food donations programme.

“The work of Aldi, and of other members, has been a true lifeline for many and I’m proud to stand alongside them to guarantee we reach as many in need as possible this Christmas. Thank you to all involved.”
