The Co-op has issued a message to all customers assuring them that there will be plenty of food on shelves this Christmas.

The supermarket’s chief executive officer Steve Murrells was reacting to reports that ongoing supply chain issues have seen empty shelves across UK supermarkets, and this could impact the festive season.

“Our colleagues in depots and stores, and our drivers, play a pivotal role in helping to feed the nation, and we’ve gone to great lengths to maintain staffing levels and support them in making sure we can pick and deliver products, and get them onto our shelves for all our customers and members,” Murrells said.

“We are working tirelessly with our suppliers to ensure good stock levels.”

Murrells also addressed new covid safety measures in light of the Government’s latest announcements.

He said: “As we head towards the end of another unusual year, I wanted to take a moment on behalf of everyone here at Co-op, to wish those of you celebrating, the very best for Christmas and the new year.

“Given the latest Covid guidelines announcement, I also wanted to reassure you that we are continuing to ensure we do our best to keep our colleagues, customers and members safe and protected across all our stores and funeral homes.

“It’s so important to us that we can continue to provide you with all our services, despite the new challenges the pandemic continues to bring. We’re committed to supporting you in every way we can so we can all enjoy Christmas together.”

He added: “In line with the previous and latest government guidance, we are continuing to maintain and implement in-store safety measures, such as face covering reminders and hand sanitising stations to keep our customers and colleagues protected.”
