Diageo acquires Mezcal Unión

Spirits distributor Diageo has acquired Mezcal Unión.

The company will keep the Mexican brand’s founders on board to help direct the business under Diageo’s ownership.

The distiller has worked with the distributor since 2016, and has integrated producers and agave farmers into its sustainability programmes with a focus on local development in its home base in Oaxaca.

The agreement will see the producer maintain its traditional distillation practices and keep its network of partners.

“Our story with Mezcal Unión began with a distribution partnership in 2016 and we are now taking it to a new level”, Diageo marketing and innovation director Mónica Michel said.

“We are delighted to continue working with its founders and welcome this brand to our Reserve portfolio.”

Mezcal Unión co-founder Alejandro Gutierrez Champion added: “This approach has supported both the growth of the brand and of local communities and agave farmers in Oaxaca.

“We are proud to have delighted consumers with an excellent artisanal-craft mezcal.

“As part of Diageo, one of the largest and most respected spirits companies in the world, Mezcal Unión will continue to support development of the category, open doors to new markets and strengthen our brand mission.”
