Tesco launches initiative to feed three million children

Tesco has launched a new initiative to provide three million meals for children across the UK.

The Big 4 grocer’s “Buy One to Help A Child” scheme will be run with longstanding charity partner FareShare.

Every fruit or vegetable purchased by customers during the initiative will be met with a donation from Tesco to FareShare.

The scheme is set to run from July 19 until August 8 and will provide an estimated three million meals to children in need.

It follows the supermarket’s previous collaboration with the food redistributor in 2020, which provided more than 29 million meals in surplus food.

“We wanted to find a really simple way to do our bit and help our customers do the same,” Tesco UK and ROI chief executive Jason Tarry said.

“We hope Buy One to Help A Child will encourage healthier choices for our customers at the same time as helping to feed children who need it most.”

FareShare chief executive Lindsay Boswell added: “In the last year, FareShare has doubled the amount of food we’re providing to people struggling to get enough to eat.

“While the lockdown may be easing, we know that food insecurity remains high.

“That’s why we are so pleased to see Tesco and its customers helping us to support children who need it.

“It will make a huge difference to so many people that have been affected by the pandemic.”

Tesco has been working in partnership with FareShare since 2016. The collaboration has seen the grocer supply more than 120 million meals to date.
