Aldi has beaten its rival grocers to be named the UK’s favourite supermarket in the three weeks ending June, according to new polling data from YouGov.

YouGov rankings placed the discounter at the top of the list, scoring a 78% popularity rating among adults of all ages, with only a 5% ‘dislike’ rating.

The achievement means Aldi has maintained its leading position since July 2023, consistently ranking ahead of its traditional ‘Big 4’ rivals.

It comes as Aldi also retained its crown as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in June, proving £32.60 cheaper than the most expensive grocer.

Aldi communications director Richard Thornton said: “At Aldi, we’re all about offering high-quality products at prices that can’t be beaten so it’s great to see British shoppers choose us as their favourite supermarket once again.”

The YouGov figures showed Lidl secured a close second, also achieving 78% popularity in the category “adults of all ages”, but a slightly higher ‘dislike’ score of 6%.

Third and fourth place went to M&S and Sainsbury’s, while on the other end of the scale, both Waitrose and the Co-op only secured 56%, and Ocado with 42%.

However the YouGov poll also showed that while Aldi came up top among adults of all ages, and millennials, it was actually Lidl that ranked top among Gen X and M&S among Baby Boomers.

Likewise, Aldi proved to be most popular among men, however the survey showed that women placed it as fourth with 80% – narrowly beaten by one point by M&S, who garnered a score of 81%, and behind Lidl and Sainsbury’s who also scored 80%.

YouGov’s poll, which is conducted using millions of respondents about a variety of consumer companies, brands and products, contains 38 UK grocers.
