Tesco has been awarded the Terra Carta Seal in recognition of its environmental activism and contributions.

The award was launched this year by the Prince of Wales to recognise companies which “have made a serious commitment to a future that is more sustainable.”

The news follows the retailer’s commitment to reach net zero emissions throughout its own operations by 2035 and across its total footprint by 2050.

Its areas of focus reportedly include transport, diets, energy, food production and waste.

The supermarket has also requested that all its suppliers commit to net zero emissions, set science-based targets and track progress to lower greenhouse gas levels.

“We’re honoured to have received the Terra Carta Seal,” Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy said.

“Making food production more sustainable is one of the biggest levels we can pull in the fight against climate change.

“Tesco is working hard to create a better basket for our customers and the planet by driving improvements in our own operations, supply chains and in our customers’ homes.”

The Prince of Wales added: “We all need to make changes if we are to preserve the planet for our children and grandchildren and these businesses have pledged to make it easier for us all to do so.”
