UK surplus redistributor Company Shop Group has announced plans to open a new redistribution centre which handles frozen products as part of a multi-million-pound investment.

The new 73,007 sq ft site in Sarton, South Yorkshire, is set to open in the summer and will be fully operational by October.

This move aims to add significant scale and capabilities to enable the food and beverage industry to redistribute more surplus food.

The redistribution centre is located a few miles from the Tankersley site and will process and redistribute millions of frozen food items across the UK through the estate of Company Shop surplus supermarkets.

According to the business, this new facility will allow the company to create a more efficient process by moving its frozen operation in-house, which increases the scale of operations.

Five new roles are set to be created from the opening of the new redistribution centre.

Chris Burns, group MD of Company Shop Group, said: “Over the last five years we have doubled the amount of frozen surplus that we handle, and this new redistribution centre is a major investment for the future, bringing significantly increased operational capacity.

“By bringing our frozen operations in-house, we will be better positioned to support our industry partners, creating a more efficient system and a platform for continued investment in our product interventions.”

The new site reinforces the social enterprise’s commitment to providing industry-led solutions to prevent surplus food, drink and household products becoming waste.

The investment comes after the Company Shop Group recently announced a milestone of redistributing 1bn surplus items since the business began.
