Birds Eye, Findus and Iglo parent company Nomad Foods has had its 2050 net-zero targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The frozen food giant is aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90% across its operations and supply chain by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement.

That includes a 72% cut in scope 3 FLAG emissions, such as farming and land use, and a 90% cut in non-FLAG scope 3 emissions.

The company has already reduced emissions by more than 40% since 2019 and says it is on track to hit 100% renewable electricity across all sites by 2030, up from 96.8% today.

Head of sustainability David Pettet said: “With food systems accounting for over one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, the food industry has a crucial responsibility in supporting the transition of the food system to net-zero.

“As Europe’s leading frozen food business, we’re committed to helping millions of consumers enjoy more sustainable meals through choices that reduce environmental impact without compromising on taste, quality, affordability, or convenience.”

“We’re proud to have our emission reduction targets approved by SBTi, further demonstrating our commitment to play our part in tackling climate change.”

Nomad Foods has also joined the Move to -15°C coalition, an industry push to cut frozen food emissions by safely raising storage temperatures.
