Tesco boss: Whoosh rapid delivery a ‘real success story’
Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy has labelled the grocer’s rapid delivery venture, Whoosh, a “real success story” as basket sizes and sales soar.
The supermarket giant’s boss said the service, which was first launched in 2021 and offers shoppers grocery deliveries in as little as 30 minutes, has “doubled in size over the last 12 months in terms of its sales impact”.
Whoosh expanded to over 1,500 stores last year, including into 42 large stores, which Tesco said helped to expand both the depth of its range and its reach, with active customers up 48%.

“What we’re seeing in our larger stores is that instead of 3,000 products, customers have access to nearly 15,000 products. We’re seeing bigger basket sizes, and I think it’s quite a valuable service for our customers,” Murphy explained.
The grocer, which today (10 April) posted a 10.6% rise in profits last year to £3.13bn, has also become the first partner of Deliveroo’s new white label solution, which looks to offer grocers and retailers an on-demand delivery service that operates through their own online channels.
Whoosh is the first brand to partner with Deliveroo Express, as it trials the service in Ireland for the first time. It will initially operate out of three stores, including Donnybrook, Spencer Dock, and Newmarket Yards, with plans to expand over the coming months.

There is quite a lot of negative feedback around concerning the extra cost of Tesco Whoosh. It depends who you are, how mobile you are and where you live. I live in a housing estate on the outskirts of Cwmbran. There is a Tesco Express fifteen minutes walk from me. I am 82 with a recent acquisition of osteoarthritis in one knee. i can make that walk but it is increasingly a struggle particularly as the walk back is mostly uphill. I get a large shop from a supermarket once a month. However, for the perishables and spur of the moment items I am stuck with the Premier Stores in my estate. It is very ill stocked and very expensive. I regularly spend more than £15 in there which takes care of the Texco charge for a basket under £15. So I am left with the Whoosh charge of £2.95. It is not difficult to save that much by shopping with Whoosh. Sometimes much easier than others. Occasionally I fancy a gin and tonic. The cheapest gin in Tesco for Whoosh is £16. The cheapest gin in my local shop is £22. For me, Whoosh is brilliant. Thank you.
Tesco Whoosh relies on Uber drivers for delivery, yet it is becoming increasingly common for orders not to be delivered marked as delivered, even when the order requires ID confirmation. When clients reach out to Tesco customer service to inquire about the whereabouts of their orders, the response is consistently unsatisfactory, citing that they cannot provide information because it involves a third party. This is happening far too frequently, and there appears to be no investigation into the actual location of the orders. As a result, customers are left waiting 3 to 5 days for a refund, which is unacceptable.
It is unacceptable to suppress honest comments in the Grecory Gazette regarding Whoosh deliveries by Uber drivers! Let people leave comments!
