Iceland Foods is set to open a store in the Falkland Islands, which it claims will make it the first UK high street retailer to establish a presence in the territory.

The frozen food specialist will open the standalone store at K4, Ross Road East in Stanley in early December, in partnership with local retailer Kelper Stores, part of the Fortuna group.

The new shop will stock Iceland’s own-label frozen range alongside products from exclusive brands including Cathedral City, MyProtein and TGI Fridays.

Iceland executive chairman Richard Walker previously expressed his ambition to take the retailer to the Falkland Islands and forms part of the supermarket’s wider international growth plans.

Walker said: “Iceland Foods has a proud history of ‘firsts’ and we are proud to be backing Britain by becoming the first UK high street retailer to open in the Falkland Islands.

“The Falklands are a special part of the British family and it’s always been an ambition of mine to support it, so being able to bring Iceland to Stanley is a huge moment for us.”

Walker will travel to the Falklands to officially open the store.

Fortuna managing director James Wallace said the family-owned business was “delighted” to partner with Iceland on the venture, adding that the store would “directly benefit the people of the Falkland Islands”.

Kelper Stores general manager Sarah Clarke added: “This is a major milestone for the Falklands, and we’re excited to be working with Iceland to bring the first ever franchise store to Stanley.

“Our customers will enjoy a wide product range and better value for money as a result.”
