Glasgow-based brewers Tennent’s is exploring opportunities to expand into stout, as the beer market faces continued demand issues.

The C&C Group-owned brand already produces an Export Stout exclusively for overseas markets, and is understood to be considering whether the format could form the basis of future product launches.

The potential move would represent a broadening of the Tennent’s proposition beyond its core lager franchise. Across the sector, brewers are increasingly looking to adjacent beer styles and limited-edition launches to stimulate consumer interest.

In 2025, Tennent’s launched Bavarian Pilsner, while more recently it introduced Tennent’s Tops, a 3.4 per cent limited-edition lager inspired by the Scottish pub serve of lager topped with lemonade.

The push comes against a challenging backdrop for beer volumes. C&C reported that Tennent’s achieved value growth across both the on- and off-trades in its 2026 financial year, maintaining its position as Scotland’s leading beer brand.

However, earlier results showed Tennent’s volumes had fallen 2.8 per cent over the first half, with pricing more than offsetting the decline to deliver 1.4 per cent net revenue growth.

Overall Scottish beer consumption was down 2.7 per cent during the period.

Despite those headwinds, Tennent’s continues to outperform the wider lager category. C&C said the brand increased its share of Scottish on-trade lager in the year, while its full-year net revenue reached €121.7m.

A stout launch could therefore give Tennent’s another route into a changing beer market, while allowing C&C to leverage the brand’s strong Scottish heritage in a category benefiting from renewed interest in darker and more distinctive beer styles.
