Co-op extends online delivery hours for England and Scotland football fixtures
Co-op is extending its online delivery hours across 180 stores on England and Scotland match days, as the convenience retailer looks to keep football fans stocked up during this summer’s tournament.
The retailer said online orders, which usually close at 10pm in many stores, will remain available for up to an hour after the final whistle across all six group stage matches.
For England’s fixture against Panama, shoppers will be able to place online orders until 1am, while Scotland fans watching the match against Haiti will be able to order until 3.30am.
Co-op said around 40 million people are within reach of the participating stores, which are located across towns and cities including London, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Brighton, Bristol, Aberdeen and Glasgow.
The retailer said the later delivery windows will be available through its major delivery partners, including Uber Eats, Just Eat, Deliveroo and Amazon, as well as through its own online shop.
The move comes as Co-op prepares for a sharp rise in quick commerce demand during major football fixtures. The retailer said previous national sporting occasions had led it to forecast a participation uplift of up to 50 per cent at peak times, as fans gather at home for matches.
Co-op is also promoting a tournament offer for members, with shoppers able to pick up two pizzas and a pack of beer, including zero per cent beer or soft drink options, for £5. Non-members will pay £6.
Co-op retail director Kate McCrae said major sporting events often drive a significant spike in online convenience orders.
“Sport is often a time for people to come together, and we see a significant spike in QComm orders when the big national sporting moments occur,” she said.
“This summer, working with our delivery partners, we are supporting our shoppers by extending trading hours in 180 stores, often into the early morning hours, so they can be ‘fed and watered’ without missing a second of the football action.”
McCrae said Co-op had undertaken “considerable supply planning” to ensure strong availability of match-night essentials, including drinks and sharing food.
“Our promotional plan is also vital, so we offer great value on key lines most often bought on these occasions, so we can all celebrate, or commiserate, together,” she added.
Co-op said its extended hours are being backed by event-led forecasting, using historic tournament and fixture data to predict demand.
The retailer is also using store-specific ranging based on catchment, online penetration and local demand, alongside promotional planning for exclusive and time-limited deals.
Co-op said the approach can deliver sales uplifts of up to 1,000 per cent on selected offers, while increasing online participation by up to 30 to 50 per cent.
The extended online delivery hours will apply across participating stores during England and Scotland’s group stage fixtures.
