Greggs creates 8-metre ‘Ta-Pastry’ for National Sausage Roll Day
Greggs is celebrating National Sausage Roll Day with an 8-metre embroidered “Ta-Pastry” charting the history of its bestselling bake.
The installation will be displayed at the Design Museum in London for two days only, from Friday 5 June to Saturday 6 June.
The stunt comes ahead of the Bayeux Tapestry’s return to the UK later this year, when the 11th-century artwork is set to go on display at the British Museum for the first time in almost a millennium.
Greggs said its own version offers a “modern retelling” of the sausage roll’s place in British culture, replacing kings and cavalry with a panoramic tribute to the bakery chain’s heritage.
The piece has been created with royal embroiderers Hawthorne & Heaney, an independent embroidery and design atelier made up of master artisans and designers.
The 100 per cent cotton artwork features 13 symbolic thread colours, including Greggs Blue and Pastry Gold, and took 200 hours to stitch.
It includes 5,521,238 stitches, 3,679 trims, 29,147.82 metres of top thread and 10,693.53 metres of bobbin thread.
The Ta-Pastry is split into six illustrated chapters, combining medieval-style storytelling, decorative borders, animals and Latin with moments from Greggs’ history.

The story begins with Ortus Primus, or The Early Beginnings, depicting John Gregg’s bicycle rounds through Newcastle, before moving through key milestones including the launch of the Greggs vegan sausage roll.
Greggs customer director Zoe Harris said: “The Greggs Sausage Roll is woven into the very fabric of British culture, which is why for National Sausage Roll Day we’ve partnered with master royal embroiderers and the Design Museum to create an 8-metre Ta-Pastry.
“Just as the Bayeux Tapestry captured a turning point in history, this 200-hour hand-stitched masterpiece is a fitting tribute to this much-loved British icon, because some legends deserve more than just a paper bag.”
Design Museum chief executive and director Tim Marlow added: “Greggs is a great British brand and what better way to mark National Sausage Roll Day than by immortalising this humble pastry in a tapestry?
“It will be unlike any other woven artwork ever created and a mouth-watering appetiser for the Bayeux mania to come.”
The Ta-Pastry will be free to view at the Design Museum on Kensington High Street from 10am to 6pm on Friday 5 June and Saturday 6 June.
