Marks & Spencer has announced the extension of Archie Norman’s position as chairman for another three years as part of the “reshaping” of M&S business strategy.

The decision follows an extensive consultation among shareholders, executives, advisers, and the committee of non-executive directors.

The high street retailer’s board made a unanimous decision to extend his tenure as chairman. M&S said its recent leadership appointment has strengthened the team, and they continue to depend on Norman to lead the company as it progresses with its Reshaping for Growth strategy.

Norman has served as chairman since 2017 and is set to reach the nine-year “comply or explain” mark in eleven months.

Fiona Dawson, senior independent director of the board, commented: “Archie has been an exceptional Chair, steering an effective, engaged Board and putting in place a highly capable leadership team under Stuart Machin, which is transforming M&S and building a stronger, better business.

“There remains much to do, and Archie’s deep knowledge of the business, drive and unique experience will be invaluable as we move to the next phase of the Reshaping for Growth plan.”

The proposed extension will begin after September 2026, following an extensive review by independent directors.

The announcement comes after M&S appointed a former Asda executive as its chief people officer and reshuffled its team after its digital chief exited the role.
