Indian food brand SpiceBox has debuted the UK’s first organic-certified Black Dal (a lentil dish) at Sainsbury’s in-store and online channels.

Two other Dals are available at the retailer: Moong Dal (whole mung bean curry) and Rarka Dal (a red lentil curry).

The SpiceBox brand creates ready-to-eat Dal that retains traditional Indian recipes while producing convenient foods for everyday customers, said the brand.

Grace Regan, SpiceBox founder, said: “The development of our Black Dal has been a true labour of love and over a year in the making, but we’ve managed to produce an incredible ready meal that is healthy, organic, and, most importantly, delicious.

“We are so excited to finally launch it into the world and continue our mission to make it easier than ever for people to eat more organic pulses.”

SpiceBox sources its urad beans from a certified organic farm in India and soaks the lentils overnight, proceeding to cook them in a 14-hour process afterwards. The Dal provides nutritional benefits for consumers, with a high fibre and protein content.

The range will be available in Sainsbury’s online and brick-and-mortar stores starting from today (September 17).
