Inflation in the UK rose again in June, according to official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The consumer price index (CPI) went up by 3.6% in June, an increase compared to 3.4% in the month prior.

The ONS also reported that the CPI went up by 0.3% in June 2025 compared to a 0.1% increase in June 2024.

Richard Heys, the acting chief economist at the ONS, said: “Inflation ticked up in June, driven mainly by motor fuel prices, which fell only slightly, compared with a much larger decrease at this time last year.

“Food price inflation has increased for the third consecutive month to its highest annual rate since February of last year. However, it remains well below the peak seen in early 2023.”

In particular, there is mounting pressure on the food and drink sector, with inflation in June rising by 4.5%, marking the third consecutive month of increase.

This is also the highest inflation rate for food and drink that has been recorded since February 2024.

The increase in food inflation was driven by higher costs of cakes, meat, milk and cheese, and eggs.

The higher inflation leads to added pressure on households and retailers to keep prices low amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Supermarket retailers have warned of higher inflation due to the newly proposed business rates and changes to the health regulations in stores.

The news comes on the heels of retail sales increasing despite the higher costs due to warmer temperatures, which was revealed by data from the BRC.
