Lidl is set to begin testing a new self-scanning feature within its Lidl Plus app as part of its ongoing investment in technology and in-store innovation.

Launching in a friends and family trial across four stores this September, the new feature will allow customers to scan items as they shop, track spending and savings in real time, and complete purchases at a self-checkout, all using the Lidl Plus app.

The supermarket chain added that a phased rollout is expected to follow from next year.

The move is the latest in Lidl’s digital transformation strategy and comes on the back of a wider rollout of self-checkouts across its UK estate.

“This marks a significant leap forward in our digital evolution,” said Lidl CEO Ryan McDonnell. “Integrated into Lidl Plus, it’s designed to offer customers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop.”

“We’re investing heavily in technologies that simplify everyday life, while always offering our customers different options to suit their shopping preferences.

“Whether customers prefer the traditional checkout, self-service or self scanning, at Lidl, they are always in control of how they shop.”

The self-scanning initiative builds on the discounter’s earlier tech rollouts, including its Click, Reserve & Collect service trialled via Lidl Plus earlier this year.

The Lidl store near where I live, Mere Green Sutton Coldfield, took out the self-scan tills at the store a few months ago, so don’t shop there anymore as takes ages to go through the main till when you just want to buy a basketful of stuff / waiting in the queue
