New data from Ocado revealed that there is a growing demand for sauces among Brits, with searches for condiments surging by 45% year over year and gourmet sauce sales rising by 22%.

There is an increasing demand for more artisanal, independent brands and new sauces based off popular classics, with almost half (49%) of customers stating they are more adventurous with sauces than before.

In particular, younger shoppers are driving the rising sales for condiments across the UK. Around two in three (66%) of shoppers between the ages of 25 and 34 stated they have an increased number of condiments compared to five years ago.

Meanwhile, three quarters (75%) use a certain type of sauce with most of their meals. The younger age group is also keener on trying out new products, with 72% stating they are more adventurous in their condiment selection.

Meri La Bella, buyer for Oils, Vinegar and Sauces at Ocado Retail, said: “Today’s shoppers are curious and willing to explore new flavours, turning to both big brands as well as our smaller, craft producers offering authentic, quality products with a twist on the classic condiments we all know and love.”
