PepsiCo fires up sustainability with new ovens at Walkers site
PepsiCo is cutting emissions at its Walkers facility with the installation of three new electric ovens.
The FMCG giant has introduced two new electric ovens, and converted a previously gas-powered oven, at its Leicester factory.
PepsiCo said the switch means crisps brands, such as Cheetos, Chipsticks, Frazzles, Monster Munch, Walkers and Wotsits are now cooked using 100% renewable electricity.
The new production method is set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the Leicester site by 1,500 tonnes, and comes as part of the group’s recent £58m investment in the factory.
The cash injection also saw it move the production of more brands to the Leicester facility, which it is estimated will cut transport-related emissions across PepsiCo’s UK operations by an estimated 915 tonnes a year.

PepsiCo UK manufacturing director Richard Clarke said: “It’s fantastic to see the impact of our investment in each and every batch of delicious snacks made using our new electric ovens.
“With a brand-new production line, better facilities for our teams, and now these more sustainable ovens, we’ve been able to transform our home in Leicester and secure its future growth.
“We’re incredibly proud of all the work that goes into making our iconic snacks right in the heart of the UK, and even more so now we’re doing it in a more sustainable way.”
Alongside the investment, the consumer food giant has also replaced elements of the existing Doritos manufacturing line, located in Coventry, with new equipment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 700 tonnes a year.
This completes an investment of a total of £140 million since 2020 across six UK sites.
