Ocado, M&S and Aldi all saw strong sales growth in the 12 weeks to 23 February, while Asda once again found itself struggling to keep up with its rivals, according to new data from analyst Kantar.

Figures from Kantar’s Total Till Roll showed Ocado was the fastest-growing retailer for the tenth consecutive month, with sales increasing by 9.6%. The figures mean the online supermarket held its share of the market at 1.9%.

M&S also showed new gains, with grocery sales climbing by 12.2% across its bricks-and-mortar stores.

Among the discounters, Aldi broadened its appeal, with over 377,000 additional shoppers flocking to its stores. In the 12 week period, the retailer hit a market share of 10.3%, driving a 4.9% rise in sales, its highest growth rate since January 2024.

Kantar head of retail Sally Ball said: “We haven’t gone back to old patterns and shopping trips remain below pre-pandemic times.

“Households made one less visit to the supermarket in February 2025 than in 2020, while online shopping appears to have stuck, taking a 12.3% market share this month versus 8.6% in February 2020.

Elsewhere, other supermarkets also fared well. Lidl saw its market share rise by 0.3 percentage points to 7.3% compared with February 2024, with sales up by 8.1%. Sainsbury’s increased its share of the market from 15.5% to 15.7% compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile convenience retailer Co-op continued to grow, achieving a market share of 5.1%, while Waitrose upped its sales by 3.2%, driven by almost 200,000 additional shoppers in the 12 week period.

Ball added: “Households visited just under five different grocers this month, the lowest level in February since 2021. The growth of supermarket loyalty schemes is partly behind this as shoppers use them to unlock exclusive discounts.”

Asda remained the only supermarket with a negative change year-on-year, down 5.2% compared to the same period last year. It now has only a 12.6% market share.

Earlier this week, Asda axed bonuses for over 10,000 managers, following the supermarket chain’s declining performance.
