Tesco is celebrating 30 years of Clubcard by awarding its more than 300,000 staff an extra £9m in free Clubcard vouchers.

Workers at the UK’s largest retailer are each set to receive £30 in Clubcard points, which can be exchanged with one of its Clubcard Reward Partners.

The initiative, which has been described as giving a “little extra” to thank colleagues for their work, marks the anniversary of the Clubcard scheme.

Tesco group membership and loyalty director Shama Wilson told the Grocer: “Our colleagues have been a key part of the success of Clubcard, doing everything from signing up new members and helping answer their queries, to reminding shoppers to use their Clubcard at the checkout,” she said.

“With that in mind we wanted to give them a little extra thank you for the role they have played helping Clubcard deliver more for our customers today and over the past three decades.”

The UK’s first modern supermarket loyalty scheme debuted in February 1995, through a rewards-based system that has since been replicated by many of the UK’s leading grocery retailers.

Tesco says that the initiative has now grown to see more than 23 million UK households own a Tesco Clubcard, which are used in 82% of sales.

Last week, the grocery giant began trialling a new Clubcard initiative, dubbed ‘Your Clubcard’, that will see shoppers offered tailored discounts, based on their shopping habits.

Did you get to keep your Tesco Discount card for life (as a retiree)? I believe that the award would only be to those retirees to whom this applied. Just “leaving/retiring” from Tesco without meeting that criteria would probably not be good enough.

I wonder if Tesco will remember their retired colleagues. I was in at the ground floor of Clubcard, having worked for Tesco for 35 (1980-2015) years.

Thank you for your reply response comment. I will check my Clubcard account on the Tesco website . I use paper vouchers and get my vouchers by post. I have had my vouchers for this quarter. Hopefully the vouchers will be in the next quarter’s statement. I see the Clubcard and discount card as a reward and benefit for my 35 years working for Tesco.

The voucher is only valid until the 10th April and comes in the form of a code to put in at the end of the transaction. You cannot use it in Tescos only their partners. I had a lovely meal at pizza express courtesy of Tesco.
