Asda has begun the £2m refurbishment of its Pilsworth store in Bury, marking the largest investment in a single store upgrade in several years.

The Greater Manchester store renovation is aimed to create a simpler customer layout, upgrading the store’s overarching look and feel, while also making improvements for colleagues.

Among other changes, Asda is to design a “stronger consolidation” of its food hall, with investment into quality enhancing kit such as new low-level fridges within produce and a new wines and spirit zone.

Other features undergoing a refresh include the addition of new lighting and overhead signage, as well as investment into digital, which will see more interactive aisle ends and a new Rewards vending unit.

The work is set to be completed by March and to be carried out over seven weeks, with sections of the store temporarily closed, and adjusted opening hours.

An Asda spokesperson said: “This £2 million investment in upgrading our Pilsworth store is focused on improving the shopping experience for hard-working families in the local community and our colleagues.

“We want shopping Asda Price to be as convenient and enjoyable as possible for all customers.”

The new store upgrade follows Asda’ recent effort to expand its convenience estate network, with new convenience sites, specifically in urban centres and major cities

Since 2022, the supermarket giant has opened around 600 convenience stores, but has also continued the planning of larger format developments such as its Park Royal location, while its Plymouth store is in the earlier stages.

The new store investments also follow Asda chairman earlier this week revealing a slew of new cost-cutting measures in his attempt to arrest the slump in sales for the supermarket chain, including the cutting of regional manger roles.
